Jordan R. Wilson , University of Wisconsin-Madison Follow. Published in Developmental Psychobiology 48 , pp. Early spontaneous orofacial movements have rarely been studied experimentally, though the motor experiences gained from these behaviors may influence the development of motor skills emerging for speech. This investigation quantitatively describes developmental changes in silent, spontaneous lip and jaw movements from 1 to 12 months of age using optically based 3D motion capture technology. Twenty-nine typically developing infants at five ages 1, 5, 7, 9, and 12 months were studied cross-sectionally.

However, how the interaction between emotional and motor components of facial expressions can modulate the motor behavior of the perceiver is still unknown. We have developed a kinematic experiment to evaluate the effect of different oro-facial expressions on perceiver's face movements. Participants were asked to perform two movements, i.

The Emotional Modulation of Facial Mimicry: A Kinematic Study

We assessed eyelid function by subjective clinical examination and quantitative means in patients recovering from facial nerve palsy. Electromagnetic search coil techniques were used to record the concurrent movements of the two eyelids to study alterations in blink main sequence peak velocity versus amplitude relationships and interocular differences in eyelid kinematics. After onset of unilateral palsy, the paresis of eyelid closure showed varying degrees of recovery. Adaptive increases in blink main sequence slope contributed to maximizing closure of the paretic eyelid.

Introduction: Facial normalcy, as measured with 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional photographs, has been documented in the healthy pediatric population. However, static images convey far from a complete representation of an individual's daily interactions with peers. Craniofacial surgery induces changes to soft or osseous tissues and thereby affects dynamic facial expression. To-date, there has not been rigorous, dynamic quantification of normal facial expression.
