Benvenuto Cellini — was an Italian sculptor and a key figure in the period of European art known as Mannerism, characterized by elongated proportions and partially described as anticlassical , despite the fact that the artistic subjects of this period were usually Greek, Roman, or biblical in nature. Later Perseus was sent on a quest by a man who wanted him dead to retrieve the head of Medusa, the Gorgon, who turns men into stone with her gaze. With the help of the gods, Perseus took down the beast. Both the statue and the character of Perseus bear commonalities with the hardened Captain Ahab. Still, Ishmael perceives his captain, at least initially, in this statuesque, heroic likeness.

In Chapter 82, Ishmael once again as he has in other parts of Moby-Dick sings the praises of whaling. As Ishmael often does, he goes into great detail about all of these figures, providing evidence and arguments for their greatness. The chapter ends with his rhetorical question, 'What club but the whaleman's can head off like that? Ishmael focuses on practical questions that have been asked about the Jonah story, such as how this type of whale could swallow Jonah and why the whale's journey would have been as it was described in the Bible. Ishmael addresses these concerns and adds that this kind of 'foolish pride of reason' is reprehensible in the face of a story that clearly describes a miracle.
